Kakheti wine trail

Wine tour in Kakheti region + Tbilisi factories

Day 1. Before leaving to Kakheti wine region visiting some of the most important factories of Bagrationi sparkling wine and Sarajishvili brandy cellar; continue to the fortified town of Signagi: lunch and walk in the old city. Visiting “Peasant’s Tear” vineyards, “Marani” – wine cellar where wine is made in clay vessels according the old Georgian traditions. After wine tasting welcome diner and folklore show in the own restaurant. Accommodation at the Old Signagi hotel in Signagi.

Day 2. After breakfast check out at the hotel and drive to Tsinandali museum and wine cellar with the old collection of wines, continue to “Vinoterra” wine factory and vineyards in Kisiskhevi; after excursion with wine tasting – hosted lunch at the own restaurant with beautiful view of Caucasus mountains. Continue to “Telavi Marani” and “Badagoni” wine factories. Kakhetian Supra party with Tamada (Toast maker) in the “Marani” of the local family. Accommodation at the Rcheuli Marani hotel in Telavi.

Day 3. After breakfast check out at the hotel and short visit of Telavi old city with the food market. Visit “GWS” wine factory; continue to Alavery monastery and visit the antic cellar where wine is made according the old traditions. Lunch in the open air Shuamta restaurant in the forest and return to Tbilisi along the beautiful Gombori mountain range.

The centuries-old tradition of feasting under the guidance of tamada – coupled with national polyphonic folk songs and dances – embodiments the delight from the harmonious unity of wine and cuisine.


Feasting with tamada...
Festive table menu provides a wide choice of the Georgian dishes and wines and strong drinks. Election of tamada adds another element of local flavor and exotic to the rare rituals of Georgian feasting; the latter imply special steps and stages, like selection of sorts of wines that suit best to the dishes and general atmosphere, appointment of the person with the rank of the deputy tamada, selection of glasses, goblets, drinking bowls that appear proper for the toasts to come, introduction of the guests to the “table codex”, tamada’s first toast… If a guest proves physical and spiritual endurance to the amounts of alcohol, and demonstrates the knack for eloquent rhetoric, singing and dancing, crowned with sense of humor and knowledge of the Georgian ways and traditions, he is bound to deserve the general admiration of guests and is viewed as the possible successor of Tamada – simply by outplaying his role and functions…


Exotic feast
Visiting the wine cellar in Tbilisi. Wine-tasting by Qvevri Brim (a custom of meeting honorary guests in Georgia). Tasting of freshly distilled chacha, hot bread from thone, stages of churchkhela-making, samovar tea in contrast with Saperavi red wine, enotherapy etc.

Wine-glorifying  tour
The program runs from January to December in accordance with grape harvest and stages of the winemaking.

Welcoming of tamada as Santa Claus by the New Year table. Visiting wine factory and wine tasting. Visit to a peasant family: tasting of home-made peasant wine from qvevri, visits to vineyards, attending and participating in process of vine cultivation, grape harvest (rtveli), pressing of grapes, preparation of vessels for grape juice and wine fermentation; tasting of machari – fresh wine juice, and badagi, boiled sweet juice, preparation of pelamushi – thick sour-sweet mass for churchkhela and the successive stages in making this exotic product, preparation of chacha for distillation, participating in the pheasants’ zaodoba – distillation and tasting of hot-fresh chacha; pouring of grape juice into qvevri, sorting of the oak casks, etc.
